Descriptive but not very practical--

The main and only thesis of the book is: emotional intelligence is important. That's it. Goleman spends over 13 hours in this audiobook to pretty much buttress the thesis with evidence from various sources including psychology, medicine, and educational programs.

The content is interesting at times but overall, the message got repetitive and I was looking for any useful information to put to use in my daily life from the book to no avail.

Unfortunately the book is very much descriptive and normative, but not very useful or practical. He describes what emotional intelligence is and makes a strong case for its importance over IQ, but fails to make it relevant to daily life.

Also, the content is not as groundbreaking as it used to be due to the recent proliferation of studies, research, and books on the subject (which could be precisely because of this book, but I plead insufficient knowledge on this matter).

So overall, I thought it was too long and not very practical, but there were still some interesting facts.

Akhilesh Chouhan Any other books on eq

Jason Wicky Ong I agree. It's informative but one won't be able to remember much from this book after a few months.

Heidi Barley I wish I had read your review before I read this book. I feel the exact same.

Blake Moore Totally agree

艁耻办补蝉锄 Must not have read the same book as me. It was incredibly practical in understanding and developing a better understanding on how the brain works in children and adults. Lots of great practices and studies were cited unlike a lot of books that seem to pull facts out of the air.

Priya Arora I agree..i was also looking for something to be applied in daily life, but could not find any relevant information. I tried hard to complete the book but disappointingly gave up when i was almost 85% done.

Roy De Caster I builds awareness for better understanding decision making processes.; definitely helps me to put things into perspective in day to day life.

Ahmad Sayegh I agree, am in page 185 now, it got repetitive and has basic information for me, struggling to finish it.

Antonio Baldassarre Totally agree

Sally Mooee I read this book a few yrs ago and I agree with all the comments, it's a hard one 馃 this book saved my(self forgiveness)....I'm only human!!! BUT it got repetitive and I too only completed all but last 50 pages or so. I was in therapy at the time and it both helped and overwhelmed(Emotional 馃槈) at the same time. I read paragraphs that were just so effective and turning that cog in my brain! .......applying the information to daily life and healing well....I got, like I said, IM ONLY HUMAN!!! ......it's helped a lot!

Georgi Still true in 2019

message 12: by Sarah (new)

Sarah I didn't complete this book for the same reason too so repetitive and you don't find worthy information easily between these many lines.

Mahmoud Dardir I can't agree more

message 18: by Peter (new)

Peter B There are 17 editions of this book. It was the definitive book that popularized the term Emotional Intelligence back in 1990s. The fact that it seems boring now is because 1000s if people have taken the phrase and concepts and published new information. Today, it is embedded in our vocabulary. Just search on who popularized the phrase emotional intelligence.

Abhijith Anand I couldn't agree more

Catrin Gammage +1

Stanley I read this comment and decided to go for the audiobook anyway. Now in the last 10% of the book I realise I really should have listened to you in the first place.

message 26: by [deleted user] (new)

In the first place, the substitle of the book said "Why it can matter more than IQ". WHY not HOW. The cover itself can already tell the content, that it would only inform, not instruct. So obviously, the book only explains why it is important, not as a how-to guide. Perhaps the author had planned to make a part two of the book where he could explain the 'how'.

I think this review missed the most important part before reading a book, its title, its preliminary pages and understanding its purpose.

No offense intended. Ciao!

message 27: by Cristine (new)

Cristine Glad I read your comment and the others on here. Saved me some time. :)

Pablo (Cicatricesdelibros) I don't know what book you read but it was really practical. It's not a selfhelp book but also it's not a technical one. It wasn't for you, that's all

message 29: by nina (new) - rated it 2 stars

nina Omg same,i mean it wasn鈥檛 a bad book but imo it just wasn鈥檛 anything mind blowing

闯茅蝉蝉颈肠补 How do I do for reading ? Help 馃槶

Rafaell Miguel Precisely!

Behzad Oskouei I think this book was to understand the concept of EQ, its biological and psychological background and importance of it, so to take attention to the concept and educate. It isn鈥檛 a guideline to how to use it, the author actually has another book for that purpose 鈥 how to work with emotional intelligence鈥, published in 1998.

message 35: by Alpein (new) - added it

Alpein Cameo I didn't know why a book should be written for a question with a few sentence answer. One cannot be said to be more important than the other, besides. Intelligence has an importance in terms of the reason for the existence of the soul. I don't think any book can tell this importance. I didn't say emotional intelligence, I said intelligence, you know. There is no intelligence that can be called emotional intelligence. The concept was named emotional intelligence based on IQ intelligence. Whereas IQ intelligence is consciousness, not intelligence. Its name is not intelligence, not IQ consciousness, but IQ intelligence.

Tarun Sharma This is exactly how I felt reading this. Thank you for sharing

message 37: by Alex (new)

Alex Taylor Is there any other book you would recommend instead of this one on the subject that is more for practical uses?

message 39: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Agreed

Salaryman 100% agree

Ashley Leafty I felt exactly like this. Good as a part one book to understand what EQ is, but I鈥檇 like a part 2 that gives ways you can increase your EQ. But much shorter for both parts鈥

Anita Exactly !

Zeren Fair point. I guess I was not looking for steps, just needed something to hold up a mirror to how I move through the world. It did exactly that.
