Just Us is the newest work from Claudia Rankine, best known for Citizen. When I read Citizen in 2015, the Michael Brown killing was still fresh and Citizen’s impact was like a bolt of lightning. After the tumultuous year that was 2020, I was perhaps expecting more from Just Us. Its style is more varied than Citizen, and at times it reaches great heights, but Just Us doesn’t bring clarity and insight to 2020 like Citizen did to 2014. Still, definitely recommended.
