The title of this book is exceptionally beautiful! I bought it blindly based on intuition alone. The more I read, the more disappointed I felt as I found it to be unkind, pretentious, and annoying.
There were definitely lines of brilliance, but it was all overshadowed by a poor story line & a smug protagonist. The story was a vessel for Kundera's ideas, so I would have hoped he'd made it more meaningful.
The characters are poorly constructed, especially the women. I didn't enjoy Tomas's prideful perspective and how his entire life revolved around having affairs behind the back of his devastated wife, who begs for his fidelity. This book feels indulgent, selfish, and unkind.
