ive been trying to stay aware of the current situation between israel and palestine, i am sad that it took reading this book to find out that the israeli occupation of palestine has been going on since the 1940s. as an american, media has historically been pro-israel, so i appreciate reading a palestinian perspective. this book no doubt gives a voice and sense of humanity to palestinians.

that being said, i just could not get on board with the writing style. i have seen countless reviews of people saying how much they love the writing and storytelling, so im sad it didnt work for me. i found the constant POV jumps between characters and 1st/3rd person, as well as the random time shifts, very disjointed. the narrative is also a lot of telling and no showing, which is a personal pet-peeve of mine. so it was often a struggle for me to read this because i wasnt enjoying how the story was written, which is unfortunate.

but i do understand the heart of the novel and value the personal connection the author brings to her book.

❀ Rose ❀ I love the fact that you’re trying to learn more about this! Western media is extremely biased. I too have a whole list of books that talk about what’s happening to Palestinians that I would love to get to soon!

scarlett i love that you're taking your time to learn about it, but pls don't call it a conflict because it's not. it's an occupation and a genocide

Sleepless Dreamer Hey, I'm Israeli and pretty involved in the conflict, it's great that you're learning more, especially in regards to the media that definitely doesn't represent most things here right! Feel free to ask me if you have any questions or would like to hear the perspective of someone living here

Also, let me correct something super briefly. The Israeli occupation didn't start in the 40s. Until 1967, the West Bank and Gaza were occupied by Jordan and Egypt, respectively.

n Its great you're trying to stay aware about it now but please don't refer to it as a "situation" or a conflict. Palestinians are being ethnically cleansed and k!lled and it's been going on for decades. The term "situation" downplays it.

Nadine Rose could you share your list of books, please. It’s so complicated for me to find books or articles about this topic that are not filtered by german journalists trying to trivialise Zionism

Danijel History/facts are one thing and books like this history fiction cannot change that by ommiting and transforming them into idilyc lies about state of middle east in 30s and 40s and past centuries before. Arabs conquests and ottoman after didn't happen over night..

So nothing was occupied then in the 40s? No thousands of Palestinians driven from their homes?
