** spoiler alert **
bleak. The writing is not bad and the overall love of the father for the son is heartwarming. I just hated it. It was horrific and tragic without any purpose to how horrific some things were. The book seemed to be a series of horrific non-events really. Seriously, the plot is pretty much a father and son headed down a road in a post-apocalyptic world. That's it. I usually love books that are beautifully tragic like animal farm, lord of the flies, Night (it's about the Holocaust), but there didn't seem to be a message about humanity in this book besides fatherly love. The hopelessness of the book was too much for me. Let me be clear though, the book was written well, but the plot was depressing.
--Spoilers---
The non-events include passing people who eat babies, encountering people who keep other humans chained in a basement to eat them, and a terrifying gang that almost kidnaps the boy. In the novel they reach their destination and it's hopeless. Oh, and the father dies leaving the boy alone in the world with only the hope of a gang of strangers to take care of him. It is just too depressing for my taste.
