I really wanted this book to be great... I think Alexis Hall is a really good writer, and I was intrigued to see how he dealt with a retelling in a fantasy world.
Things I liked:
- The world was really cool... I would like to see other stories set it in, maybe designed around on other people.
- The ending was both surprising and satisfying.
Things I didn't like:
- At the beginning of this book, I felt like I was dropped into this world without having the world built around me. Later, I was annoyed that John Wyndham (the Watson character) was doing too much description of the world rather than showing the world. This book never achieved a good balance of showing but not telling.
- John Wyndham's breaking the fourth wall by talking about the narration and the discussions with his editor about what he should and shouldn't be writing about took me away from the story.
-John's insistence on not saying swear words when quoting people using them (which seemed to be about everyone in this world)... just got tiring and wasn't as funny as it was trying to be.
- Part of the beauty of Sherlock Holmes is seeing him use deduction solve the case and it feeling really impressive. Following this case, just seemed like an excuse to go through different parts of the world, which was fun in and of itself, but I just wasn't following the logic of the case. Basically they just went to extraordinary means to talk to each of the suspects, and Shaharazad (the Holmes character) using some random thing that each person said to decide that they were innocent.
