This series is a hidden gem of self-publishing. Miller does a great job with pacing, characters, a creative magic system, unique spins on fantasy tropes, and above par action.
I never read Eragon, but the blurb said this was similar but written for adults. There’s some grim dark chapters by the end that definitely aren’t sunshine and rainbows, but nothing too gory.
What really shines is the relationship between the protagonist and his dragon, who is able to communicate with humans and thus makes for entertaining and unique perspectives.
The best part of the series IMO is the magic system that involves food and cooking. I won’t spoil anything but it makes it challenging to read on an empty stomach. The food descriptions are a little too realistic when you’re hungry.

I highly recommend this series, I gave the 2nd book a full 5.0 stars. 3rd book, Defiant, comes out July 2023, and I’m starting it the day it comes out.
