4.5 stars. George Saunders comments on seven short stories by four Russian authors, Chekhov, Tolstoy, Turgenev and Gogol. All seven short stories are in the book, approx 147 pages of the 404 page book. Saunders provides thought provoking commentary and tips for readers and writers. A very worthwhile and recommended read.

The seven stories are, ‘In the Cart by Chekhov, ‘The Singers by Turgenev, ‘The Darling by Chekhov, ‘Master and Man by Tolstoy, ‘The Nose by Gogol, ‘Gooseberries by Chekhov and ‘Alyssa the Pot by Tolstoy.

I certainly gained a greater appreciation of the art of short story writing. All seven stories are very worthwhile reads. I particularly like Leo Tolstoy’s ‘Master and Man, which I give a ‘five star rating.

This book was first published in 2021.
