The Best and the Brightest

This is an excellent, detailed history of US entanglement in Vietnam. It has particular value as a study of group decision making under uncertainty, information incentives in a bureaucracy, and the misapplication of expertise. Halberstam writes good set-piece biographies of the key players and clear analysis of major (and minor) events, but the prose is at times turgid and the book is as a whole overlong and somewhat loosely edited.
