I really can't understand the positive reviews. Also, this book definitely needs a trigger warning as it is transphobic as hell.
All I wanted was a nice queer book. I don't mind the cursing at all, I like a real experience.
I won't give a proper review here as I don't think this story deserves it.
It's written from the perspective of a (trans) Woman and when she first starts to claim that trans male people "have it so easy", I was already offended but thought "ok, this is a character, does not mean that the other stands behind this". One of the reasons why the life of a trans male person is supposed to be so effortless, is that they are more easily welcomed in the lesbian community. Note here: if a lesbian community is exclusive regarding trans female people it most certainly is discriminating against trans male people too as they usually see them as "lost butch lesbians". Also: a correct comparison would be how trans male people are treated in the gay male scene, which can be VERY discriminating towards trans male people.
There are much more reasons why this book is transphobic/cis-sexist but this is one example.
As a transperson myself this book was highly offending. It also worries me that cis people read this and think this is right. It is not.
If you are queer and you want to read a queer book: choose something else.
If you are cis and you want to read a book with an educating trans perspective: choose a different book.
If you want to read a book that's about a (trans) woman victimizing herself and channeling her unreflected self-hatred towards other trans people and people in general: this is your book.
