it was ok
bookshelves: romance, over-hyped-books

The Blurb of this book is so much better than what we get.
What we do get is a low drama, fast paced, predictable, mediocre nanny book.

The beginning of the book did not hook me or give me any reason to care and it was just so damn slow. Between the long conversation with Liam and Reed about finding a nanny, and the setup for his ex that never came into play. Then we move onto Juliet and all the time spent with nana at the nursing home and then the unnecessary scene about going to the bar with Alex, then we move onto her job and boss at the diner just to get a cliché scene where she meets her soon to be boss and almost breaks his nose. The start of the book was so so slow and full of unnecessary information and scenes I almost DNF'ed it. If I'm being honest I should have DNF'ed it.

-to much time spent at the retirement home overall, but especially in the beginning of the book. I didn't really enjoy nana and her friends, it felt like filler and boring fluff that took away from the true story.
-Liam and Juliet never had any true relationship developments or time together it was just lust to love but no moments together to get us there or to make us really root for them
-The kids are 3 and 5 but are so well behaved and act perfect- not realistic, why does everyone write angel kids? huge pet peeve
-The set up with his ex turned into nothing. It was never truly developed and never came full circle or was even flushed out. In the end a lot of his actions were blamed on how his ex did him dirty and fucked him up but we never got to see that struggle through the book and suddenly at the end it was just like "oh well ya know my ex really fucked me up and I've been a shell of a man ever since" fucking show me don't tell me how you are a shell of a man. Let me see Liam struggle with intimacy and trust bc of his ex like if you are going to use the ex as a excuse at least build up her story.
-We never know anyone's age and never know much about any of the people around him, like the people at the end of the epilogue and Briggs, they could have had more subtle set up, and I wouldn't have been so confused as to who the hell these people are and why they are important. I am still confused about them.
-I didn't like the authors writing it felt very clunky at times and gave lots of unnecessary info that made things boring. She also tends to write lots of paragraphs instead of breaking it up. long paragraphs lead to info dumping stupid shit, repeating same info and just boring ness overall.
-Also what is with the weird cliché amount of falling in this book, Juliet falls and hurts her ankle and she falls in shower. Liam falls during basketball and falls on her drunk in the hallway.
-Almost setup for thunderstorm trope then just doesn't follow through - I was just hoping for the thunderstorm trope because I love that trope but instead we got a weird naked standoff in the bathroom. It was weird and awkward. Besides who rushes into the bathroom when someone screams after the power goes out? Like it get it she was in the shower and you were worried about her but ever heard of KNOCKING?
-I felt like I didn't really get to know the characters and who they really are and their internal struggles or anything- Very poor character and relationship development
-Liam was supposed to be hot and cold with her but we hardly ever got that maybe 1 or 2 times in the beginning of the book but then that's it, very disappointing that it happened so little when Juliet makes it sound more than it was. We Also heard about the tension but never really felt it between the Characters.
-Lot of development happens behind the scenes and a lot of time passes, suddenly its a week later or a month etc., it left the timeline very confusing because all of a sudden it was pregame training then it was the first game and suddenly they won the playoffs and are going to the Stanley cup or something? time fly's very fast in this book.
-There are some Very repetitive internal monologue, like someone will talk about something or think it then the next page it gets brought up again, then then a few chapters later it gets brought up again but it never gets developed its all surface level and it happens a lot,
-Liam and reed talk about how he is a shell of a man until Juliet comes into his life but you never really see or feel that, again poor character development.
- Juliet fell into the mother role quickly and skipped the learning how to deal and take care of the kids she was just instantly perfect with them and everything was perfect.
-poor take on grumpy sunshine trope
- the time it takes to get to the actually newspaper ad part of this book was ridiculous
- emotionally lacking
-its crazy because they don't even enter some type of relationship until 70% through the book and then in no time at all he breaks up with her because he's not thinking things through and then he gets her back right at the end but it felt cheap and not romantic. his speech didn't match what happened in the book and doing it at the old folks home was kind of a weird place to declare your love while you try to win the girl back.
-I tend to dislike it in books when nana's/grandparents play a huge role, but I do think It can be done right. IMO I don't think it was done right and it was very boring and cliché with the whole grandpa donut newspaper Sunday date thing, lol how convenient?
-I wanted to love Liam and Juliet, but there were times when the connection between them felt forced
-It was kind of frustrating how Liam kept running away when things got tough and then he would use his daughters as an excuse to justify everything to himself. again if the relationship with his ex was more flushed out and prevalent in the book then we would understand him running away but it wasn't.

I'm not trying to be harsh but all these little things/inconsistency's bugged me in the book. overall its not the worst thing ever but I don't think I will be reading from this author anymore. I have read some reviews and people have said consistently that the blurb and premise of her books are amazing but the story itself ends up falling flat, just like this one did. Granit this is only her second book, I might try again later down the road but I doubt her writing will change enough for me to truly enjoy her stories.
