it was ok

Changing my review after about five minutes of really thinking about this book. It promised so much, yet delivered so little. While the 1790s chapters were pretty interesting, they were ruined by the modern day chapters that were filled with so much useless commentary, lamenting, and plot hole. This is the least damning example, yet it annoyed me so much (no spoiler) Caroline is digging around someplace she shouldn’t be in the dark of night, and is using her iPhone flashlight to guide the way. Now, I’ve had iPhones with bad battery life but apparently Caroline is working with 12 year old iPhone that needs to be on the charger constantly because some light flashlight use dropped her from like 60% to 0 in MAYBE 10 minutes. The author kept giving us updates on how much it had dropped, each one more unbelievable than the next.

Now that I’ve gotten my most petty complaint out of the way, it feels like a waste of time to run through them all. Overall, I’m not going to tell you to *not* read it, but I might tell you to just skip all the modern day chapters.
