Originally written in 1882, the novel takes the reader back to Bengal in the clutches of the famine and the common man bearing the burden of exploitation by the local rulers. The central theme is the Sanyasi rebellion in which women played important role side by side of their husbands. The book gives us our national song- ‘Vande Mataram which became the rallying call for rebels.
