Shakespeare

A decent introductory overview.
Bryson is especially effective in making explicit how little we really know about Shakespeare and how much 'knowledge' is supposition or even 'what feels right' according to whichever individual is writing about the bard at the time. There's also a worthwhile amount of historical context about the theatre, contemporary writers and playwrights, monarchs, and social preoccupations.
I would readily recommend this to a newbie wanting to get a sense of Shakespeare's world.
