it was ok

** spoiler alert ** I just. Don’t read these books. The Giver is a one hit wonder. Don’t bother. In response to my review of Messenger, that wasn’t worth all this.

This book is basically three smaller books in one (so again why weren’t Gathering Blue and Messenger one book?) with the first book being a retelling of sorts of The Giver from another perspective. I enjoyed this part. It kept me going on reading. Claire is likable and as a mother I wanted her to be with her baby!

Then the second book happens Why does it happen? It doesn’t need to. She easily could have met the Trademaster anywhere. We go to this whole new place just to leave it and it not be connected with all the others? And for her to find love and leave it? How did she even get there? I did enjoy her discovering color and music, that part was neat.

Then the ending Not worth all this at all. Basically “get behind me Satan and everyone could have been happy a while ago?? It also makes Matty’s death feel in vain. He died to restore people but didn’t kill Trademaster, but Gabe says you have no more power and suddenly Trademaster is no more?? The author also skips ahead so randomly and skips parts I would have liked to have read. How did Jonas and Kira court and marry? Seems forced. Show me some of it.

My thoughts are scattered, but hey so were these three books. The Giver, amazing. Must have been lightning in a bottle because the next three are not the same. Almost feels like a different writer. She jumps around way too much between past and present, and changes first and third person often which is confusing. And minor thing but why did she change the FONT?! As well as the styling of the chapter numbers??

Okay rant over. I read this book in one day so clearly I was eager to see what happened and enjoyed the world, but the writing is sub par and the “payoff is lousy.
