it was ok

** spoiler alert ** Okay, I don't normally write reviews on books but I felt compelled to explain myself. There were parts of this book where I thought to myself, "Finally! Some action! Some excitement! Some good reading!" And that might have led to a better review, but the end of the book killed it for me.

Part one read like a Harlequin romance novel. Fine if you like that sort of thing, but not for me. Part two had it's good qualities... some sense of the unknown and all of that, but to be honest, Bella's self-sacrificing, Jacob's infatuation and Edward's indulgent-father attitude towards Bella was repeated ad nauseum and frankly made me kind of ill.

All that I could deal with - because in reading the rest of the books I kind of expected that sort of thing as par for the course in the series. It was the end of the book that completely ruined it for me.

The plot holes were like swiss cheese. Seriously. In Meyer's attempt to wrap up the book in a nice, pretty little package, she basically re-wrote her own history. I found myself saying over and over, 'but wait! I thought...??' It was just plain confusing. I'm not sure if she just got tired of writing the book or what. It felt... rushed. And some of the descriptive parts were way too... convenient for my taste.

What about the animosity between werewolves and vampires?? Was that just... gone? And the bloodlust? We had a major gathering of human-blood-drinking vampires and *everyone* stayed true to the 800 mile hunting radius? Right. Oh, not to mention that there was 20+ pages leading up to an epic battle between the Voultori and the 'vegetarians' and everyone just... walks away? Talk about anti-climactic. And then we get to the very end of the series only to find out, oh yeah! The werewolves aren't *true* werewolves, they're really "shape shifters." Huh? Bella's two to three year newborn stage? Shoved conveniently to the side so that she can stay in touch with her father. How sweet. Every thing just turned out fairy-tale-happily-ever-after and hunky dory. If she had ended the series with all the vampires and werewolves (um, I mean shape-shifters, sorry!) gathered around a campfire singing kumbaya, I wouldn't have been the least bit surprised.

All in all, after all the hype that this series has generated, I was highly disappointed.
