This book is really awesome, Sad and scary but awesome! This dystopian society basically makes women into slaves/or near slaves and even is using them to procreate which is where our handmaid comes in. Basically in the future populations have taken a severe plunge as fewer and fewer woman are having children in favor of careers. These alleged religious fanatics take over in order to try to increase the population but their twisted and often degrading methods used to do this are horrid to imagine. Our heroine had a daughter and spouse and is ripped from them when they dare to try to escape the new order. She is thrown into this new world not knowing what happened to her spouse or her daughter but imagining only the worst for them. She is forced into being nothing more than a sexual servant under the guise of re-population. It's really crazy! Imagine not being allowed to read, to be forced to wear essentially a burka in public and then being forced to have sex with some old man while not only does his wife look on but she is holding your arms down while he does it. The successful handmaids who have children are venerated while those who fail to become pregnant are sent to work camps to die... Poignant, frustrating, sad, and fascinating all at once! This book is something everyone should read although the topics can be more adult so I would recommend it to older teens or young adults and older who have the maturity to put the events in perspective. It is not hot or sexy but just shows how one lone female can have the courage and hope to get through such a disaster and live to tell about it. :) Hope you find this helpful!
