The Nachman Stories

Upon rereading, I can confirm that The Nachman Stories keeps its place as one of my favourite short story collections. Nachman is a flawed character thrown into morally dubious social situations he is ill-equipped for, which allows Michaels character work to shine, and each rationalisation for Nachman’s actions possesses its own peculiar charm.
Nachman isn’t necessarily a likeable character. In fact, I don’t believe anyone should read this collection and think of him as a “good person. However, he is still a great character. Many of Nachman’s actions are a source for strong reproach but Michaels writes him in such a way that, in brief moments, you can ascertain just how he got there.
