As cliche as it sounds, I wanted to like this book. I really did. There was a long moment or two that I thought "well maybe it's turning around". Um no. There are many things wrong with this book, and I'll list a few, but only what's off the top of my head as I don't feeling like spending more time thinking about this book.

First off, I actually love this genre - and thus it's not the "cray-cray" or bad language that put me off. In general, the book just felt off and flat a good deal of the time.

1.) I'm sure it's just me, but stab me in the eye that Flynn felt the need for Amy to say/think "that's correct grammar" TWICE when using the phrase "this person and me." Who the heck cares? Was she trying to show Amy's perfectionism? Again - who the heck cares? It's inner dialogue and inner dialogue would not have that. When it was used in diary format, that in itself would have shown it was written for someone else. When it was done in her head it just doesn't make sense.
2.) Too many strings left wafting in the wind. No one asked for the type-written notes received by others? And no one even raises an eyebrow that an abused woman afraid for her life would put on an elaborate lovey-dovey treasure hunt?(ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME???) Or it's perfectly acceptable that she didn't seek revenge on the couple that stole from her (or at least stew over it with her obsessive thinking)? Or that Nick doesn't even think, knowing her jealous past with other people, hey - she'll probably kill the kid? Ugh.
3.) The ending. It sucks. I don't need a perfect ending, but I do need it realistic and based on how the characters have acted through-out. It felt contrived for the sake of "being different".
4.) The "big twist" in the middle wasn't that big. And Amy's character wasn't all that likable before the twist reveal. I had hopes for awhile after the twist, but then got annoyed again.
5.) Amy is very methodical and brilliant - that's drilled into you -
but it seems forced. She's not always methodical and she's not always brilliant. There are too many things left untouched that the cops and Tanner would have picked up on.
6.) There are several areas where it just felt the author was lazy. Especially in the end. Had I stopped reading 100 pages earlier I would have been more satisfied. Maybe even happy with the book.
7.) There are several areas where the author feels the need to "explain" things that don't need explaining. It's annoying.
8.) It's beyond annoying how quickly Amy gets pregnant on a first IVF cycle when she is in her 40's. Statistically the likelihood of that is extremely low. Add the fact that no one noticed her going through treatment (daily shots, regular doctor visits at the clinic, anesthesia) is just dumb. Any woman that has gone through IVF will want to throw this book across the room.

I'm sure there are more examples, but that's enough IMHO. Many people like this book, so it's possible that these things don't bother others like they bother me. But if even just a few of these things bother you, then you may want to consider a pass.
