I think I love this book as much as Donna Tartt does in her introduction.
Firstly, the language of the 1st person narrative is consistent throughout the book & totally appropriate. This is a cowboy story written in a comedic style. I laughed & giggled thru-out. ALL of the characters are strong & work well on this canvas. Mattie is such a beautifully flawed narrator.
I vaguely remember the John Wayne film, but am more familiar with the Cohen Brothers version of a few years ago. Like their other book adaptation - No Country For Old Men - this is faithful to not only the narrative, but to the sense of the style of writing. If you loved that film, then I can assure you, you will love this book.
Sadly, my library doesn't stock other Portis books. I see myself buying them online to enjoy a damn fine writer.
