Dracula

I was rather disappointed by this classic. It started out with promise, especially the Jonathan Harker bits. Then all the male characters descended into blubbering worshippers of the two female characters, and by the end of the novel, I was wishing Dracula could snack on all of them and be done with it. I kept having to put it aside and read chapters in between other books, but I managed to finish it at last.

I do think there are little sparks of interesting material throughout, aside from the initial chills of Harker's experience in Dracula's castle: like when Dracula first arrives in Whitby, when Lucy starts to deteriorate into this insane shell of her former self, there were some well-described images there.
I also quite liked Renfield as well, his whole side story was probably one of the most interesting parts of the book. I liked that there were things going on that you knew were Dracula's doing, even if Stoker wouldn't outright say it until later on in the story.
But EVERYTHING ELSE lol, the superfluous, melodramatic rantings of Van Helsing and Seward and their praise for Mina and Lucy, they just go on for way too long. All this talking and rambling on and preparing and planning and shit. It gives me a headache.
