Excellent read. The story was inventive and intriguing until the wheels came off at the end. I think Bear loves his inventions too much to create good endings...he can't seem to keep from following every thread to a conclusion at the expense of good story telling.

"Well, I finally understand why I bought a bunch of Greg Bear novels over the years. The stories are very interesting. What I cannot understand is why I took so long to read any of them. But no more delays. I find Bear's writing to be far above the typical scifi: great ideas, interesting stories, but simplistic characters."
