** spoiler alert **
This book is by far the best historical fiction book about World War Two I’ve ever read.
It started off really confusing because I didn’t figure out death was the narrator until I read the beginning four times. I also didn’t understand the whole idea about Leisel’s younger brother, but I was quick to hop on that train.
The best characters were Papa, also known as Hans Hubermann, who is Leisel’s foster father, Rudy Steiner, Leisel’s best friend, and Max Vandenburg, the Jew their keeping in their home. Rosa was really great too, but these characters (other than Leisel; forgot to make that clear) are my complete favorite.
It was funny at the start and a little sad when we moved forward, but the second to last Part (Part Nine I think), well I couldn’t keep the waterworks in. I was crying an ocean. Then we have the last part, which wiped away my thick tears. A very good ending as I would say. I am so happy that Liesel got to reunite with Max!
Would I read this again?
Most certainly! I loved it, I just have to watch the movie first. I’m just wondering, is it even good? The casting looks great, but is the movie itself good? I’d just like to know.
Do I recommend it?
If you don’t read this book you are clearly missing out. I loved it to pieces, and I do say that a lot, but this is a true love.
This is why the book deserves a five star review!

“I wanted to tell the book thief many things, about beauty and brutality. But what could I tell her about those things that she didn't already know? I wanted to explain that I am constantly overestimating and underestimating the human race-that rarely do I ever simply estimate it. I wanted to ask her how the same thing could be so ugly and so glorious, and its words and stories so damning and brilliant.”

“She leaned down and looked at his lifeless face and Leisel kissed her best friend, Rudy Steiner, soft and true on his lips. He tasted dusty and sweet. He tasted like regret in the shadows of trees and in the glow of the anarchist's suit collection. She kissed him long and soft, and when she pulled herself away, she touched his mouth with her fingers...She did not say goodbye. She was incapable, and after a few more minutes at his side, she was able to tear herself from the ground. It amazes me what humans can do, even when streams are flowing down their faces and they stagger on...”

“A small but noteworthy note. I've seen so many young men over the years who think they're running at other young men. They are not. They are running at me.”

“Usually we walk around constantly believing ourselves. "I'm okay" we say. "I'm alright". But sometimes the truth arrives on you and you can't get it off. That's when you realize that sometimes it isn't even an answer--it's a question. Even now, I wonder how much of my life is convinced.”
