Twin Crowns (Twin Crowns, #1)

This book has a stunning cover and a summary that really pulled me in. Unfortunately that's about where my enjoyment of it ended. I got to about 80% before just skimming the last bit.
I will say, two writers creating the two different POV's of the sisters is extremely clever and fun. The audiobook also had two narrators which added another layer to that.
Overall this book has everything I usually like- magic, romance, fantasy, a murder plot, etc. But it just really falls short. It struggles to find a balance between moving the plot along versus the sisters romantic subplots. I think too much time was spent over-building the attractions between Tor x Wren and Shen x Rose and so it just feels like it drags on. I put this in my DNF shelf but I did skim the last couple of chapters and from what I saw there is an extreme rush job to push the plot forward and set up for book two. A big info/lore dump is mixed in there too which feels added just to give the twins MORE 'uniqueness' in their magic.
Unfortunately this book tip-toes the lines of making their MC's have that Bella Swan effect. Super special but somehow clumsy, super beautiful but somehow unaware of it and not like other girls. Rose was a pretty insufferable brat for most of the book and I assumed shed get better with her attitude the more she learned about her history but she didnt. Wren was a better character to my tastes but there was just too much tropey setups for romantic situations for my liking.
I think the second book could be better. There is a lot of set up there.
