Spoilers Ahead (if you one of the 5 ppl who haven’t seen them already 🤓)
I am in pain writing this review. FRL, this series was just ruined for me.
My man Casteel deserves SO MUCH BETTER.
My issue with this book was the cheating. Shocker? No.
This book is yes, marketed as a fantasy, BUT this book is HEAVILY pushed out as a romance. It is a fantasy ROMANCE book, and any time this book is talked about, the relationship between Poppy and Casteel is the main selling point (you can't tell me you picked up this series for the amazing plot); therefore, Poppy should not be emotionally cheating on Casteel (her heartmate, her husband, the man we have spent THREE books falling in love with) with his best friend WHILE her husband is being TORTURED for her.
I love Kieran, I really do, but for the past couple of books he has been used as this sort of sexual device with Poppy (the bj, the cabin thing, the dream) and it really rubs me the wrong way.
Also, Casteel felt like a whole ass side character in this book. He is the LOVE INTEREST. Why did he completely lose his personality and just become this Poppy-hype-man? Which, don't get me wrong, I love when a man stands by, defends, and encourages his girl, but that's ALL he does. Give the man some of his character back.
IF Jennifer wanted this to be a poly relationship she should have made that clear from book ONE. And I’m not saying this to shit on her, I’m saying that as readers we have spent over 1,500 pages falling in love with PoppyCas as the main loves and Kieran as the funny and loyal best FRIEND. Adding him into this relationship isn’t going to be a balanced throuple. PoppyCas who are heart mates (mates, soul mates, etc.) will ALWAYS be above Kieran in my mind, he will never be an equal in that relationship. It's forever going to be Poppy, Cas, ANNNNDDD Kieran.
I was one of those people who didn’t give a shit if the joining happened. I figured it would since it was mentioned in the first place, but I didn’t care either way. The issue is, it should have been written without Poppy having to cheat on her husband. I think JLA needs some lessons from Penelope Douglas on how to write a threesome because PD knows what they are doing.
I think I really would have liked this book if the whole cheating thing hadn’t been going on. It really, REALLY pains me to say that I will never see Poppy the same way again. She used to be this strong, badass, female MC who I fell in love with, but now all I can see her as is a cheater.
Casteel, I wish I could go in this book, grab you, and bring you home with me. I promise I won’t cheat on you with your best friend 🖤
Also, I still have no clue whats going on plot-wise. I'm just along for the ride 💀
