It seems there really was a Pope Joan who was really a woman who dressed as a man and got away with it but was stoned to death when she had a baby in public.

Meaghan There is a book that explores the possibilities of a historical Pope Joan (whom the Catholic Church still insists was a myth). It's called The Legend of Pope Joan: In Search of the Truth. I really liked it. I'm not convinced Pope Joan was real but the author convinced me she COULD have been real, and with the passage of time and lack of documentation, that's about as good as it's gonna get.
