Fascinating text on building a equal figure by ending the cult of growth. We measure our lives and output in terms of GDP. But it’s a flawed measure. The creators of the metric understood it at the time but we needed a way to compare ourselves with the USSR and measure the allocation of effort in the economy.
I’d recommend this book to anyone. For those deeply integrated into the current economy (my friends and colleagues at hedge funds and private equity), it’s a challenge to digest. Is finance adding value? Or is it accelerating the plunder of the Global South and our environment. I believe most people know the answer but don’t want to acknowledge it.
Instead, why not shift towards a future where we all work less? We can maintain echoes of capitalism and meritocracy, allowing avenues for wealth by working harder and technology advancement. But why must we all live in the rat race? Right now, it’s a lack of imagination by the classes placated by the gospel of growth. Growth will set you free. Your children will be richer and happier than yourself. But that’s not coming true. So what’s the response? This book is an attempt at answer to this question.
