Read a good deal and then the ending. Spent a while listening to folks talk about this book and learned some interesting things like the book's relationship to Moby Dick and Paradise Lost. I think Harold Bloom hits the nail on the head when he calls this book a major aesthetic achievement. The prose is rhythmically outstanding.
