Okay, I think we've officially entered the extremely strange realm where a book outstrips its author. I can't count the number of times there was this cool visual image (gargoyle correcting his size by plinking out ice cubes) or interesting emotional moment (Rachel having a flashback) and I nearly missed it because of a clumsy phrase or an anvil to the head. And this book lost major points with me for ham-handed exploitation of terminally ill children for emotional juice that it didn't even need.
And yet . . .
And yet it's still on all dimensions better than any other paranormal-urban-romance-fantasy I've tried -- plotting, sexual politics, supporting cast. And yet I'd read the Rachel and Trent show until the cows come home. And yet there are clearly even more interesting things to come, and not every last one has been semaphored fifty pages ahead of time. And yet, the pixies!
And yet . . .

I really agree with this entire review. There are lot of times, despite liking the story, that I miss important things because of poor turn of phrase.

The exploitation of dying kids. I freaking couldn't.I grew up in children's hospitals, usually in the cancer ward because of my immune system, or lack thereof. Sick and dying kids aren't magically more wise. They're just kids who are dealing with what life throws at them. I hate it when media acts as if all sick kids are so wise and knowledgeable on life, because they're already so far past it that they can see everything plainly. No. That's not how it works. That's not how we work. Stop.
It's just more inspiration porn, which, trust me, we have plenty of. Stop exploiting us to make yourselves feel better about your life. Uuuugh.I have a lot of feelings about this, and I appreciate you, a complete stranger, allowing me to bitch in the comments of your review.
