it was ok

Oh boy.

This was pretty bad. The writing itself was okay. It was readable in that middle of the road way that thrillers can be. The protagonist, Maris, is a junior sociology professor at a Midwestern university and lives with her husband and daughter froma previous relationship. After an incident months before, she quit drinking. But people who were close to her don't really believe she's quit.

So, Maris is trying for tenure. She's supposedly a feminist who has a decent social media following because she writes think pieces on white male privilege, and about a local rape case where the rapist only served 4 months. And then the blackouts start.

Without spoiling it, it's the most over the top story I've read in a long time. It's not based in reality or science. And Maris' feminism feels weird and inauthentic. It's the most white lady feminism ever; it's so bad it feels like a parody. The story was stupid. The pacing went wonky about halfway through. And the resolution was an insult to people who manage to sit through the whole thing.

Do yourself a favour and miss this one.

Michelle Nielsen My thoughts exactly!

Gwen I agree!

Kristin Dennison I’m not even halfway in- I wish I had read reviews before I chose this as my free monthly kindle book, because it’s just so bad 😂 on the bright side, it was free, so at least I didn’t spend anything on it

message 4: by Ginny (new) - added it

Ginny Thx for this review. That’s too bad because the topic could be fascinating

Mary Curtis Pretty much the way I feel about it too. I want to add that I feel that the author could have made it work had she thouht it out more. It seems to me that the book has no direction, one moment a thriller, the next a commentary on feminism, and after that a book on alcoholism. She never tied them together. Like you, I felt the end was an "insult" like a waste of time.

Kristy Bummer, the description sounds so good! Disappointing. I'm glad I read reviews before I bought it though, even if it is in sale.

Judy I agree with your assessment.

Jane M McHattie Yes I agree with above comments. Give it a miss

Lize I got about halfway and had to stop. I didn't expect something so unrealistic.

message 12: by Ash (new) - rated it 2 stars

Ash Agreed! It was ‘ok until the middle, then it felt like a different author came in and finished the book? It went in a direction so unexpected, I actually laughed out loud (not in a good way).

In addition, it was a bit of an insult to those in recovery, as it seemed so cliche. By the end, I just wanted it to be over!

On to the next! 🙏🏽

Kennedy Thank you for putting the perfect words to my dissapointment in this book. I’m actually mad at myself for finishing it

Konica Sh Thanks for the review. I really struggled to read a few chapters, then got some new books and this one got buried. Wouldn't have remembered it but just saw it in my currently reading shelf on ŷ. Your review brought back the memories of traumatic experiences I went through before I sent this book to trash

Jenn Your review is exactly what I would have said. So terrible.

shannon Stubbs I'm 19% through and feel its over the top.

message 22: by V (new) - rated it 1 star

V Absolutely agreed. My notes on my kindle app are not kindle.

message 23: by Emma (new) - rated it 3 stars

Emma Webster Agree. Was going well, until the reason became apparent and then it rapidly went downhill. I echo others sentiments, I'm just glad it was free!

message 24: by Amy (new) - rated it 1 star

Amy the faked feminism part- yeah and searching for likes on twitter. yuch.

Marci Could not agree more!
