** spoiler alert **
I enjoyed the cultural aspects of the story, and the descriptions of the world: food, art culture; and the close knit relationships between the main character and her family. However, the set up of the plot should've warned me: Life and Death as personified by images on the "Loteria" game (similar to Bingo with images instead of numbers) play a game of chance using the life of a young girl as the stakes. It's not the light hearted magical-realism fantasy story that the cover art implies. The story drags as Life and Death debate fate and free will during game play and the girl's life events are mirrored in the game's images. After many red herrings and plot holes we finally reach the needlessly bleak and terrible conclusion. No, this just didn't do it for me.
