Blatant symbolism makes the reader able to discern exactly what is going to happen and what means what from the get-go. There is no surprise or character development, just the descent into the inevitable.
Are you referring to the part about the dog getting shot? That could not have been less subtle if Steinbeck used big, boldface letters across the page stating: THIS IS FORESHADOWING , FOLKS! WAS EVERYONE PAYING ATTENTION TO THE FORESHADOWING? FORESHADOWING, GOT THAT?
