This book took me way too long to read, nearly 11 months altogether, with many pauses to read other (much shorter) books. 1000 pages is a lot, especially when printed in a small font, and including pages-long end notes in an even smaller font!
But the writing was excellent. Detailed descriptions, wonderful references, and comical situations.
The primary threads of the story were: youth at a tennis academy, drug addicts in rehab, espionage concerning secret film clips. But too many great details to mention, e.g., the local color of the Boston area, the filmography of the protagonist’s father, the highjinks of the school boys.
The drug rehab group parts had a very dark tone. Also so many end notes regarding details of the drugs and their manufacturers.
The wheelchair espionage unit was brilliant.
Details like the crazy midnight parking shuffling outside the halfway house were great!
The commercialized renaming of the years based on sponsors was hilarious.
Also the US-Canada conflict and the large waste dump site created between the two countries, as well as their resulting union in ONAN.
So much good, but very, very long. Highly recommended for intellectual stimulation, but taken with a grain of salt.
