did not like it

I gotta be honest here, the graphic incest descriptions really threw me off. Call me a prude, but it felt to me very gratuitous and unnecessary. But maybe not, after all, that's the whole meat and bone of the book.

There are two main points in the novel: the incest and the narrator witnessing a murder, which leads him into a revenge scheme.

So had I know that the incest was gonna be such a big part of it maybe I would've known to stay away from it.

But it's not about the plot. You see, throughout the book, I wondered if the main character wasn't losing his mind. And by the end of the book, judging by what was written by the narrator, the characters are left wondering the same.

And that's really what every Auster's book is about, isn't it? That's his shtick. He writes a whole book and by the end he pulls the rug underneath you being like "it's a book! it's not real! whatever! that's fiction! forth wall something! gotcha ya!".

And if you think that's cool, if that's your thing, (and you're ok with incest) hey, go for it.
