it was amazing
bookshelves: middle-grade

Loved. This was a hugely ambitious novel, and it felt so true to the time period. Lots of focus on family and church, something that is wholly lacking from contemporary children's literature. I don't usually do audio books, but I was crunched for time, so I listened to the first half. The story of Franny is interspersed with ads, song lyrics, and school reports about historical figures, so the audio feels almost like a reader's theatre. Halfway through it was feeling slow, and I was curious how the book was presented visually, so I switched to the printed version. I liked Franny as a character more in the printed version--she didn't seem as whiny. Overall, an incredible snapshot of one week in the life of a 5th grade girl during the Cuban Missile Crisis. I'm curious how the rest of the trilogy holds up. *Read for school.
