really liked it

The Hunger Games was actually recommended to me by my cousin (currently a trainee English Teacher.) She told me it was a good lighthearted read, with some grungyness to it. I happen to agree.

Suzanne Collins' style is very simple but quick paced. I found the flow very easy and that it maintained nicely and had read 10 chapters without realizing it. It's an engrossing read and it's fun that way.

The story is set in a dystopian world, where North America is divided into 12 Districts (13 has been obliterated) and is controlled by the Capitol. A brutal dictatorship, who are exceptionally vain. It centers around Katniss and her life in District 12. The poorest district of them all. Katniss has already had a harsh life, but things get worse for her when her father dies and her mother goes catatonic. With her hunting talent, some sneaking around and some desperate and hungry soldiers, she eeks out an existence for her and her family.
Then, when the capitol comes to take one boy and one girl from the district, to compete in a disturbing tradition called the "Hunger Games" Katniss find herself in a precarious place. One which will see whether she lives or dies. Along the way she is helped by the muscle bound but gentle souled Peeta, a drunken Haymitch who is unfortunately her only hope and Effy (who I found hilarious!)

Katniss, I found to be a refreshing character. She has alot of flaws, but she's tough, very loyal and especially protective of her younger sister. I just find those admirable character traits.

Haymitch is delightfully funny as the drunken mess and Peeta offers a sort of realistic portrayal of feelings a child would go through, in his situation. I liked Effy and grew attached to her over the series.
Cinna is also fabulous!

I am especially glad at how gender is portrayed in Suzanne's world. one's sex doesn't define anyone, it is simply a consequence. I find that so refreshing!

This probably doesn't deserve the hype it gets (and I'm a fan!) but it is still a good novel, with a sort of griminess and fairly realistic take on the cruelties of our world (or maybe, Suzanne's world.)
