The word-building and action scenes are definitely the highlights of this novel. Each time I opened this book it felt like I was stepping into a real world, with a completely unique ‘magic system that I really enjoyed. The concept of valiants was really interesting too.
I also loved the characters, but I wish I could have gotten to know them more. Some of them, like a side character named Raya, were brushed aside completely after the first quarter of the book when their story definitely wasn’t over.
The main characters (Seri, Eshai, Lavit, and Tsana) of course got more on-page time, and I did like their dynamics with each other. However, I felt like there was more to them that could have been explored. Especially Tsana, whose character development and relationship with Seri felt rushed. The villain was interesting but also could have been looked at with more depth. Basically, I just wanted more from the characters, because I did like them.
(Slight spoilers in the last paragraph)
I really loved the duality the main character was able to find for herself at the end of the novel - I can’t say more without spoiling anything major, but Seri finding balance in her existence was beautifully written.
