I wanted to love this book, because I love fairy tales, and REALLY love when an author adapts them (like, say, Gregory Maguire). But, I didn't love this book. I certainly didn't hate it, but I didn't love it.
It could be because I'm not all that familiar with the world it's set in: both ancient and modern day eastern Europe (Russia, Ukraine, etc.). Certainly, I've heard of Baba Yaga and her house on chicken legs, and how that figures in to this story is pretty clever. But, I just didn't connect with the story, but I don't think that is through any fault of Orson Scott Card.
One thing I felt was missing was resolution for some of the peripheral characters, like Ruthie and the dog-owning neighbor b****h. After our last encounter with Ruthie, she runs off in hysterics, never to be seen again. Of course, she isn't central to the story, but (view spoiler)
