did not like it
bookshelves: annoying

Though this was a short book, it was a slog... not at all what I expected. I thought I could at least get into the 90's memories, but this guy is so self absorbed, it was painful. I tried hard to see if he was mocking himself... but sadly, I think not. His friend's death was tangential to his own snobbish navel gazing; he was the same annoying asshole back in the day, as he is now--incredibly BORING.

Erica Lea I came to read the 1 star reviews because I’m shocked this won a PULITZER. He waxed poetic about endless peoples names, pointless (to the reader) memories, places, etc. It read like a piece written by a (like you said) self-absorbed 8th grader. I’m sorry his friend was killed, and I briefly enjoyed being immersed in his Asian-American upbringing and leaning about what that was like, but it was only a fraction of the words he wrote.

Meg Stewart Read this because it made it to NYT top 100. I do not see what the big deal is about this book. I mean, I know it’s a memoir and his life is his life, but I truly found it dull. Why it has gotten such esteem is baffling to me.
