This is an extremely compelling story. After all its narrated by Death himself..the Grim Reaper, the stealer of life. A novel idea! Pun intended. The story speaks to the human spirit and endurance under harsh, cruel, hateful circumstances; the enduring spirit of people who are taught to hate, but even with the chance of being punished, they extend a hand of humanity and love. The protagonist Leisel Meminger, aka, the book thief, is a credible character and she brings a feeling of all thats was right and wrong with the world in the 1940s. Its a well written story with quite a cast of "real" characters. Five stars.
