As always, Fallaci skillfully writes about reality, although this time it's fictional. In this book she introduces a very diverse group of Italian soldiers in mid-eighties Beirut. She explores why they enlisted and the way this experience changes them.
I love Fallaci's work, but I wasn't convinced by this book. I still found many parts showing her skill. There were however too many interludes, too many philosophical contemplations for my taste; while I usually like them. It hampered the flow of the story and I even skipped some small parts. I doubted to give three stars, but in the end landed on two. Mainly because I struggled to finish the book, although I like large parts of it and am happy to have finished it.
