You really need to be passionate about the study of literature to read books of literary criticism. Whatever insights are available generally require that you read at least several works the critic discusses, long and almost never ready-to-hand.
This book is different because it discusses short stories, and the stories are included!
Saunders takes a reader-response stance in analyzing these Russian short stories but also takes a writer’s perspective by wringing advice to composition students from his analyses. Altogether a wonderful swim!
