Daniel Taylor's Reviews > Saga, Volume 1
Saga, Volume 1

I read this because my favourite fantasy writer, Patrick Rothfuss, gave it 5 stars and wrote a rave review. I wanted to see what appealed to his writer's mind.
Even so, this story was unexpectedly good. Take as your starting point Romeo and Juliet in a space setting. But from there it moves into this tale of assassins, unlikely allies, hidden pasts and conflicting goals.
It's always a good thing when writers give characters goals that conflict with the goals of the other characters. It's what creates tension in a story. But Vaughan is more skilled than that. He makes readers want characters to succeed in their goals even when those goals conflict with those of other characters that you love.
This was better than I imagined and I'm now eagerly awaiting Vol 2.
