9/10

This is the best Shardlake novel in the series for me. A perfect blend of action, mystery, historical background, and great characters that drive the story forward.

By this point in the series you know the main set of characters and their nuances so you can jump on board straight away and get into the story.

Whilst some may worry about the “Serial Killer aspect of a historical novel they need not as it is done extremely well. I was kept guessing until the end and was disappointed when it all came to an end, surely the sign of a good story.

My only slight nag (there has always got to be a little criticism) would be the Barak and Tamasin bickering story line. This only went on slightly but it was there none the less. Even with that criticism it led to the biggest intake of breath later on so maybe it worked well and I haven’t realised yet.

There is only one more to go in this series now which is disappointing but if it is anything like the previous ones or this one then I’m in for a treat. Highly recommend as is the whole series.

If you like this, try: “Gates of Fire Steven Pressfield
