Since his horrible injury, acquired during the war with the Turks, Viscount Médard de Terralba has been driven by a furious slayer. In his image, he cuts in two everything that unfortunately crosses his path. With this barbaric gesture, he does charitable work, considering that the remaining half is "a thousand times more profound and precious than the lost part" (he is undoubtedly preaching for his parish).
But soon, some testify to having seen the one who sows evil everywhere act with kindness (isn't the good with his restrictive morality worse than the bad?) - then return to his old inclinations. In this confusion, the young shepherdess with whom he is in love is the only one to have understood Médard's double nature.
The Cloven Viscount is an ironic and jubilant parable highlighting man's duality, making him hesitate between good and evil. As the facetious philosopher Italo Calvino rightly points out, it is in human nature to be ambivalent, "a mixture of goodness and wickedness."
