Water for Elephants

I was really impressed with the way Gruen was able to write from the standpoint of an elderly man. She was spot on with the narrative voice. The story, about a young man whose life leads him to be a vet for the circus, offers pints of knowledge about that lifestyle during the Depression. The elephant also has a starring role, and while I'm not sure she should be personified the way Gruen did, it made empathy for the animal a hundred times easier- without overwhelming the reader with PETA-esque tirades. I have no doubt elephants are mysterious, likeable, and witty creatures.
