I like this book but was disappointed not to love it.
It started out beautifully with intricately drawn characters that I immediately liked. It pulled me in quite quickly and ramped up to a nice level of tension as it revealed what was at stake for the 3 narrators.
The problem was that it then plateaued and stayed there.
Although a lot went on during the course of the book, nothing actually happened to the 3 main characters. There was a great deal of time devoted to what might or could happen if things went wrong. But nothing ever really did. It was almost as if the author liked her characters so much she didn't want anything bad to happen to them.
As a result it was an interesting insight into life back in the 60s, and it did make me reflect on how I would have acted in their shoes, but overall I just wanted to finish the book as quickly as possible so that I could move on.
