really liked it
bookshelves: persia-iran

The opening panegyrics were not fun, but they included some keys to the allegory to come so they were worth reading. Meisami's introduction and notes were helpful: she opened up more marvels and gave a sense of the learning and art that went into this book. It will take another reading to start to give them the attention they deserve, but the book delivers imaginative, fun, suspenseful story-reading pleasure too. I loved the story of Fitna carrying a calf up the tower stairs every day until it grows into a full-sized bull and she grows the muscle to carry it -- all to make a point. I had a magical week reading each of the Seven Princess's tales on her day.
