Before The Big Bang: The Origin of the Universe and What Lies Beyond

The ideas set forth in this book are remarkable and will leave you sitting alone in the quiet, deep in thought. Mersini-Houghton has pursued the mysteries of our universe’s origins with clever imagination and may have discovered some astounding truths. In order for us to get there, she has to lay some groundwork by explaining the foundational concepts she utilized to conceive of her theory. She does this very well, eliminating most of the math and relying on easy-to-understand visualizations and thought experiments to bring the reader up to speed. This is successful, and it is important that it is because this stuff is weighty.
Throughout, she lightly weaves in a memoir which provide us context on why she felt confident in challenging conventional theories, even when the consequence of doing so might be detrimental to her career. It was also heartwarming to read about her father, who might be the envy of all children with scientific curiosity.
In the end, we are shown some magnificent theories about the origins of our universe and it’s lack of uniqueness. Not only that, we are also shown how some of the predictions that arise out of her theory have been verified through observation. It’s convincing.
If you have any interest in cosmology, read this book. It’s both heavy and light, a duality of which I’m sure the author would approve.
