** spoiler alert **
Emily is a great writer and I learned a lot from this book about industries I have little knowledge of or interest in. A lot of reviewers found this book reassuring or empowering but I left the book feeling quite sad and disempowered. One of my favourite passages was the one where Emily’s therapist encourages her to feel and express her anger by smashing a jar and she acknowledges that anger is an important message from the body. Although there were other empowering moments like these sprinkled through the latter half of the book, I was waiting for a stronger and angrier punch against the years of trauma, abuse, and humiliation I had just read. This is why I left the book sad but that in itself was a powerful and realistic message for me about these industries and I definitely believe the book is a worthwhile, thought- and emotion-provoking read.
